Mission Statement

The Lukeman–Leuchs Studio, located in the heart of the Berkshire Hills in Massachusetts, is dedicated to advancing and celebrating the enduring spirit of artistic innovation and imagination. The nonprofit centers on a historic studio built in 1900 by renowned sculptor Henry August Lukeman, a friend and colleague of Daniel Chester French. The campus reflects a rich artistic lineage spanning three generations: Augustus Lukeman, Frederick Leuchs, a noted stained glass artist, and sculptor Catherine Leuchs Bohrman, Frederick Leuchs’ daughter. Together, their legacy forms a living testament to creativity passed thoughtfully from one generation to the next.﻿

Our mission is to nurture artists across disciplines by offering not only space, housing and resources, but also a deep sense of history, belonging, and respect for artistic practice. We honor those who came before while supporting those shaping the future. Within this environment, creativity is understood as a living inheritance—rooted in tradition, shaped over time, and continually evolving. ﻿

The Studio will foster the creation of new work within a distinctive architectural and natural setting, encouraging meaningful creative exchange and community engagement. Its proximity to leading regional institutions—including Tanglewood, Chesterwood, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Berkshire Botanical Garden—positions the Studio as a dynamic hub for cultural collaboration and public programming.﻿

Through artist residencies, educational initiatives, and public exhibitions, the Lukeman–Leuchs Studio seeks to preserve and share the legacy of visual arts. Its purpose is to honor the past while cultivating the future, supporting artists whose work bridges heritage and innovation in the enduring spirit of the Berkshires.

About us

Lukeman-Leuchs Studio 

Founded by Catherine Leuchs Bohrman and her sister, Paula Leuchs McNay, the Lukeman-Leuchs Studio is envisioned as a distinguished nonprofit artist residency housed within a historic studio built in 1900 by sculptor H. Augustus Lukeman. Rooted in both preservation and creative practice, the residency will offer a quiet, focused environment where artists can develop their work with a space rich in artistic legacy

The residency will support a range of creative practices, from independent studio work to potential collaborative projects, while emphasizing inclusivity and mutual support. Through this work, the Lukeman-Leuchs Studio seeks to contribute to a vibrant cultural landscape and to honor the enduring relationship between art, history and place.

I look, I touch, I follow the curve of form. Sculpting becomes a puzzle to solve —an unspoken language of emotion and perception. With my hands I work with the presence and absence of material. Each sculpture begins as a question, a whisper of thought seeking shape without words. I let space breathe. Patience is my teacher. Over time, my work has evolved into a contemporary abstract style that explores human and organic themes.﻿
